Soldiers, civilians killed as Boko Haram strikes Adamawa villages

Zoyols Blog

Tragedy struck Adamawa State during the festive period as suspected Boko Haram insurgents launched violent raids on two communities in the Hong Local Government Area. The attacks, which took place over the Christmas holidays, resulted in the deaths of at least two soldiers and several civilians, while properties worth millions of naira were razed to the ground.

The first wave of violence broke out on Christmas Eve in Dugwaba District, an area that has long been vulnerable due to its proximity to the Borno State border. The insurgents reportedly stormed the community around midnight, leading to a heavy gun battle as security forces moved in to defend the residents. Troops from the 144 Battalion, alongside anti-terror police units and the Civilian Joint Task Force, responded to the distress calls and eventually managed to push back the attackers.

Despite the successful repelling of the insurgents, the victory came at a heavy price. Two soldiers were killed during the fierce exchange of fire. Their bodies have since been moved to Yola, where they were laid to rest according to Islamic rites. Residents who witnessed the chaos described the scene as heartbreaking, with local sources telling Reports that several civilians are also feared dead following the midnight raid.

The terror did not end there. Just 48 hours later, on the night of December 26, the militants struck again. This time, the target was Mayo Ledde village, located just past Gaya Gartsano town. The recurring nature of these attacks has left the people of Hong LGA in a state of fear and mourning, even as security agencies remain on high alert to prevent further incursions.

As of Sunday evening, the full extent of the damage at Mayo Ledde is still being assessed, but the displacement of families and the loss of lives have cast a dark shadow over what should have been a season of celebration. Local authorities are calling for reinforced security presence in these border communities to protect vulnerable citizens from future raids.
