In a recent appearance on Arise TV, Senator Aminu Tambuwal voiced his support for international diplomatic engagement as Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections. Tambuwal, a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who is currently collaborating with the opposition coalition under the African Democratic Congress (ADC), argued that global interest could serve as a vital safeguard for the country’s democratic process.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s political history, Tambuwal pointed out that international attention played a significant role in the 2015 elections. He noted that the scrutiny from the global community at that time helped ensure a level playing field, which ultimately paved the way for the then-opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) to secure victory. While he clarified that foreign interest is not the only way to achieve credible polls, he maintains that it remains a powerful tool for maintaining transparency.
The Senator was careful to specify that he is not calling for direct interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs. Instead, he is advocating for democratic nations to collectively signal their commitment to free and fair processes. He emphasized that this approach should not be limited to any single country, like the United States, but should involve a broad spectrum of the international community acting as observers of the democratic will of Nigerians.
The conversation also touched on the controversial U.S. military strikes in Sokoto and other parts of the Northwest this past December. While Tambuwal expressed hope that such kinetic actions would not become a recurring theme, he observed that the intervention seemed to have a sobering effect on the current administration. He suggested that the bold stance taken by the U.S. government forced the ruling party to re-evaluate its approach to the worsening security crisis, leading to more decisive action in recent weeks.
However, Tambuwal raised serious concerns regarding the lack of transparency in these security arrangements. As a sitting Senator, he lamented that such high-level military agreements were never brought before the National Assembly for oversight. He stressed that any cooperation with foreign powers whether it involves the United States or any other willing partner must be governed by a clear, well-defined framework that respects Nigeria’s sovereignty and involves the nation’s lawmakers.
Ultimately, Tambuwal’s message was one of cautious openness. He welcomed help from any nation ready to assist Nigeria in tackling its security and electoral challenges, provided such help is anchored on mutual respect and legislative transparency.
