The Kano State Hospital Management Board has taken decisive action following the tragic passing of Aishatu Umar, a patient who died after undergoing a procedure at the Abubakar Imam Urology Center. The move comes amid disturbing allegations that surgical scissors were accidentally left inside her body during the operation.
In a statement released through Public Relations Officer Samira Suleiman, the board’s Executive Secretary, Dr. Mansur Mudi Nagoda, confirmed that an initial investigation has already verified that the incident occurred at the government-owned facility. As a result, three medical personnel directly linked to the case have been placed on immediate suspension from all clinical duties.
The board has formally handed the matter over to the Kano State Medical Ethical Committee. This body will conduct a more exhaustive probe to determine the full extent of the negligence and recommend appropriate disciplinary measures in line with medical laws and professional standards. The authorities have made it clear that they intend to handle the situation with total transparency to restore public confidence in the state’s healthcare system.
The Management Board expressed its deepest sympathies to the family of the late Aishatu Umar, acknowledging the immense pain of their loss. Dr Nagoda emphasized that the state will not tolerate any form of professional negligence, noting that patient safety and the dignity of those seeking care must remain the top priority across all health facilities.
This incident has caused a significant outcry among the public, raising urgent questions about surgical safety protocols in state hospitals. In response, the board has vowed to strengthen its internal monitoring systems and enforce stricter professional guidelines to ensure that a tragedy of this nature never happens again.
