Governor Uba Sani has officially launched a major infrastructure overhaul at the main campus of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, flagging off the reconstruction and upgrading of its 60-kilometer internal road network. The move, celebrated during a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, marks a significant intervention by the state government into the historic federal institution.
While speaking at the site, Governor Sani emphasized that the project goes beyond simple paving. The plan includes the installation of proper drainage systems, modern street lighting, pedestrian walkways, and specifically designed routes to ensure the campus is accessible for individuals with disabilities. He noted that although ABU is a federal entity, his administration views any investment in education as a direct investment in the future of the state and the nation.
The Governor explained that his administration is driven by the conviction that barriers to learning must be removed. By improving the daily lives of students and staff, the state aims to foster an environment where research and academic excellence can thrive. He reiterated that a well-educated populace is the most reliable path toward achieving lasting security, prosperity, and good governance.
The benefits of the new road network extend beyond the classroom. The Governor highlighted that the upgrade will improve safety by allowing emergency and service vehicles easier access to all parts of the campus. Furthermore, a modern infrastructure will boost the university’s capacity to host major international conferences and convocation ceremonies, which in turn attracts visitors, partnerships, and fresh investments into Kaduna State.
From an economic perspective, the project is expected to provide a quick lift to the local community. The construction phase will engage a significant number of artisans and laborers, creating immediate job opportunities for the youth and stimulating the economy in Sabon Gari, Zaria, and surrounding areas. Governor Sani reminded those present that ABU, named after the first Premier of Northern Nigeria, remains a cornerstone of leadership development in the region.
The Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Adamu Ahmed, described the Governor’s intervention as both strategic and compassionate. He expressed deep gratitude for the state’s support, which also recently included generous land grants intended for staff housing. Professor Ahmed noted that these gestures directly improve staff morale and institutional stability, which are essential for any university striving for excellence.
The Vice Chancellor further praised Governor Sani’s inclusive and empathetic style of leadership. He observed that in just two years, the administration’s approach has played a vital role in restoring public confidence and promoting stability throughout the state. For ABU Zaria, this partnership is seen as a renewed hope for maintaining its status as a premier center of learning.
