The political atmosphere in Kogi State is already beginning to simmer as the countdown to the 2027 general elections takes an unexpected turn. Former Governor Yahaya Bello has officially stepped back into the spotlight, confirming his intention to vie for the Kogi Central Senatorial district seat. This move sets a direct collision course with the incumbent, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, in what many observers believe will be one of the most closely watched legislative battles in the country.
The announcement unfolded during a significant gathering at the palace of the Ohinoyi of Ebiraland. The former governor was surrounded by a powerful assembly of traditional rulers, religious leaders, and key political stakeholders when he made his intentions known. In a video shared via his official social media channels, Bello was seen formally accepting the mounting pressure from his supporters to return to public service at the National Assembly.
The current Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, played a visible role in the proceedings, openly urging his predecessor to heed the calls of the people. Speaking in the presence of the Ohinoyi and other prominent Ebira personalities, Ododo emphasized that Bello’s representation would be a vital asset for the district. The endorsement from the sitting governor highlights the deep-rooted influence Bello still maintains within the All Progressives Congress structure in the state, despite completing his two terms as governor earlier this year.
Adding to the momentum, local leadership has already begun rallying behind the former governor’s bid. Amoka Eneji, the Chairman of Okehi Local Government Area, was quick to offer his congratulations, noting that Bello’s legacy in Ebiraland is defined by unity and development. He expressed confidence that the former governor’s transition to the Senate would be a natural continuation of his service to the region.
However, the path to the Senate will not be without its challenges. The seat is currently held by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, a formidable politician who broke long-standing barriers in 2023 to become the first woman to represent the district. Known for her legal background and grassroots popularity, the incumbent has established a strong presence in the red chamber. As 2027 approaches, the brewing rivalry between these two political heavyweights is expected to redefine the power dynamics of Kogi Central.
