In a decisive victory for local security forces, a group of suspected terrorists met their end after an attempted ambush in Yobe State took a disastrous turn. On the evening of April 19, soldiers from the 233 Battalion, working alongside members of the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), were conducting a routine patrol near Nanewa village in the Babbangida area when they were suddenly targeted by armed insurgents.
According to military sources who shared details with Reports, the attack began around 5:30 p.m. Despite the element of surprise, the troops and their civilian partners reacted with remarkable speed and precision. A fierce gun battle ensued as the forces successfully repelled the assailants, resulting in the deaths of three suspects on the spot. The remaining attackers were forced to retreat under the superior firepower of the Nigerian forces.
Following the confrontation, a sweep of the immediate area revealed a significant haul of abandoned equipment. The troops recovered three AK-47 rifles and five motorcycles, which the fleeing insurgents had left behind in their haste to escape. This recovery is seen as a blow to the operational mobility of the group in that specific corridor of the state.
The operation was a clean success for the military, as no injuries were reported among the soldiers or the CJTF members. The team made a safe return to their base by approximately 7:15 p.m. While the current atmosphere in Nanewa is described as calm, security experts noted to Reports that a sense of uncertainty remains among residents who witnessed the evening’s events.
In response to the skirmish, military commanders have confirmed that the troops remain highly motivated and are currently on high alert. Vigilance has been stepped up in the Babbangida region, with ongoing patrols and intelligence-led operations designed to restrict the movement of these groups and ensure they have no room to regroup or carry out further attacks against the community.
