A political pressure group known as the Enugu State Unity Forum has launched a grassroots awareness and mobilisation drive across Enugu North Senatorial District in support of Governor Peter Mbah’s return for a second term in 2027.
The move also reaffirmed the district’s commitment to the zoning arrangement in Enugu State, with community leaders and stakeholders insisting that Governor Mbah should be allowed to complete the turn of Enugu East Zone by 2031.
The campaign was formally unveiled during the inauguration of the Enugu North Senatorial District chapter of the Forum at the Nsukka Local Government Secretariat. Speaking at the event, the Forum’s Coordinator for Nsukka Zone, Associate Professor Ikechukwu Ibenekwu, described the group as a collective of adult residents drawn from different walks of life who share a common interest in the quality of governance currently being experienced in the state.
He explained that the Forum brings together people from political, professional, religious and community backgrounds, including traders and grassroots leaders. According to him, the focus in Enugu North is to engage communities at the ward and local government levels, creating awareness and building support for a governor whose performance, he said, speaks for itself.
Ibenekwu noted that Governor Mbah’s style of governance has been inclusive and people focused, adding that his administration has simultaneously revived key sectors of the state’s economy. He said the mobilisation effort was a way for residents to appreciate and reciprocate what he described as visible and impactful leadership.
Chairmen of the six local government areas in the district also used the occasion to commend the founders of the Forum for acknowledging what they described as the far reaching transformation taking place across Enugu State. The Chairman of Nsukka Local Government Area, Engineer Jude Asogwa, praised the governor’s development model, which distributes projects across the state using the 260 wards as a guiding framework.
Asogwa said this approach has ensured fairness and balance, giving Enugu North, with its 102 wards, access to a significant share of projects such as Smart Green Schools, Type 2 Primary Healthcare Centres and Farm Estates. He added that the spread of projects across all three senatorial zones shows that the governor does not discriminate in his development agenda.
He further stated that the administration’s performance has strengthened the confidence of supporters in the zone ahead of the 2027 general election, describing Governor Mbah as one of the most outstanding leaders in the country at the moment.
Traditional rulers present at the event also voiced their support, restating their commitment to the zoning principle. Speaking on behalf of his colleagues, the traditional ruler of Nkpunano community in Nsukka Local Government Area, Igwe Patrick Okoro, said the royal fathers in the zone were united in backing Governor Mbah for a second term.
According to him, allowing the governor to continue would enable him to complete Enugu East’s slot, adding that his achievements in office so far have earned him widespread respect and trust.
The event also featured the formal inauguration of the Enugu North Senatorial District, local government and ward executives of the Enugu State Unity Forum. Barrister Friday Omeke administered the oath of office to the zonal executives, while Honourable Felix Asadu performed the same duty for the local government and ward officials.
The gathering attracted a large turnout of political leaders and residents from the six local government areas that make up Enugu North Senatorial District. Special prayers were also offered for Governor Mbah, his administration and the continued progress of Enugu State.
