When Nigeria returned to democratic rule in 1999, Adamawa State struggled under the weight of poor infrastructure, inconsistent governance, and a lack of genuine development. For years, the state’s potential was overshadowed by dilapidated public services, insecurity, and economic stagnation.
That tide began to turn in 2019 with the election of Rt. Hon. Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, fondly called the “Fresh Air Governor” and “ATM.” His arrival marked a decisive break from the past, ushering in a new era of purposeful and people-driven leadership.
Fintiri was not new to the seat of power. In 2014, he briefly served as Acting Governor, offering a glimpse of his ability to deliver under pressure. But with a full mandate in 2019, he hit the ground running, and for many citizens, his leadership felt like a breath of fresh air. Every sector of governance began to reflect his vision of a more functional and prosperous Adamawa.
One of the most visible changes has been in infrastructure. Roads, highways, flyovers, and bridges—long neglected—were either constructed or rehabilitated, linking communities, boosting trade, and cutting transportation costs. Yola, the state capital, alongside other towns, has been dramatically reshaped by modern road networks, to the point that frequent visitors often marvel at the transformation.
Housing, another long-standing challenge, has not been left behind. A 1,000-unit housing estate is near completion, designed to reduce the housing deficit, with similar projects planned for the remaining local government areas.
Civil servants, once plagued by irregular salaries, now enjoy prompt payment under Fintiri’s watch. This commitment has not only restored faith in government but also stabilized the local economy and boosted investor confidence. In education, new schools have been built, old ones rehabilitated, and teachers recently promoted with their entitlements cleared in full—measures that have lifted morale and enhanced the quality of teaching across the state.
The Governor’s passion for sports is equally evident. Abandoned projects, like the Yola Sports Complex, have been revived, while investments in modern stadiums and recreational facilities are providing young people with opportunities to grow their talent. His recognition of Coach Justin Pwanidi Madugu, who guided Nigeria’s Super Falcons to victory at the 2024 WAFCON in Morocco, highlighted his commitment to celebrating and encouraging excellence.
Youth empowerment has been another cornerstone of his administration. From vocational training and entrepreneurship schemes to the recruitment of over 5,000 young people into the civil service, his policies are equipping the next generation with sustainable livelihoods. Through the Poverty Alleviation and Wealth Creation Agency (PAWECA), financial support has reached thousands of small business owners and vulnerable groups across all 21 local government areas, cutting across political divides.
Agriculture, a backbone of Adamawa’s economy, has received significant attention. Farmers have benefited from access to fertilizers, improved seeds, and modern machinery, while irrigation farming and livestock development are helping to boost food production. Today, Adamawa ranks among the top states with strong agricultural growth potential, reinforcing its role in Nigeria’s food security.
The state has also stepped up its response to natural disasters. A dedicated disaster response unit now provides swift relief to victims of floods and landslides, while longer-term strategies such as climate-resilient farming and flood-resistant infrastructure are being implemented to reduce future risks.
On security, Fintiri’s administration has invested heavily in infrastructure, recruitment, and closer collaboration with security agencies. These efforts have not only curbed insecurity but also restored a sense of safety among residents.
Healthcare has equally benefited, with the rehabilitation and construction of hospitals, clinics, and primary healthcare centers across the state. Access to quality care has improved, mortality rates have dropped, and more medical professionals are being drawn to Adamawa.
Traditional institutions have also found renewed life under Fintiri. Once marginalized royal structures are being restored and empowered, fostering stronger grassroots leadership and greater community participation while creating new employment opportunities.
