The political climate in Abia State is heating up as Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, the representative for Abia North and a former governor of the state, has issued a sharp response to Governor Alex Otti. Kalu is urging the governor to shift his focus toward actual governance and service delivery, warning that “gutter politics” and personal insults will not be the deciding factor in the 2027 general elections.
The exchange follows recent comments from Governor Otti that Kalu described as desperate attempts to undermine the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its growing footprint in the state. In a statement released through his media head, Sunday Maduka, the Senator characterized the governor’s rhetoric as being fueled by political insecurity. Kalu argued that instead of engaging in verbal attacks, the current administration should be looking for ways to solve the many challenges facing Abia residents.
Kalu was particularly firm about his right to promote his party, noting that his loyalty to the APC is a matter of principle. He explained that working to strengthen the party in Abia, supporting President Bola Tinubu’s re-election, and preparing for a robust governorship bid in 2027 are all legitimate parts of his role as a political leader. He dismissed the governor’s criticisms as a “shameful spectacle” meant to distract the public from the administration’s own shortcomings.
Beyond the political back-and-forth, the Senator highlighted the pressing needs of the people, such as improved healthcare, tackling youth unemployment, and addressing security concerns. According to Kalu, the voters in Abia are far too intelligent to be swayed by propaganda and will ultimately judge every leader based on tangible results rather than insults.
Maintaining a defiant tone, Kalu stated that the current friction would only strengthen his resolve to mobilize resources for an APC victory in the next election cycle. He emphasized that the party is ready to compete on the basis of superior ideas and grassroots engagement, leaving the final verdict to the electorate. As the 2027 polls draw closer, it is clear that the battle for the soul of Abia State is just beginning.
