Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has announced plans to introduce shuttle buses and car hire services at the Gateway International Airport to make passenger movement smoother and more convenient.
Speaking after boarding a ValueJet commercial flight from the airport to Abuja on Thursday, the governor said the initiative will connect major towns and cities across Ogun State, allowing travelers and their luggage to reach the airport with ease.
“We are going to ensure there’s reliable bus transportation from major cities and towns,” Abiodun said. “Dedicated buses will depart at scheduled times to bring passengers from places like Abeokuta, Ijebu-Ode, Ilaro, and other parts of the state directly to the airport.”
Abiodun noted that his administration remains focused on expanding infrastructure at the airport, describing the positive global attention it has received since the commencement of commercial operations as highly encouraging.
“There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing a vision come to life,” he said. “The success of our first sold-out flight shows how much people believe in this project. This airport was once a forest, but today, it stands as a key part of our multi-modal transport master plan. Now, you can reach Ogun State by road, rail, or air.”
Among the 32 passengers on the Abuja-bound flight was the Alara of Ilara Kingdom in Epe, Lagos State, Oba Olufolarin Ogunbanwo, who described the facility as a “legacy project” that will serve generations to come.
“I’m deeply impressed and excited,” the monarch said. “I must commend Governor Abiodun and his team for bringing this monumental project to life. My kingdom is only about 40 minutes away from here, and this airport saves me the stress of traveling all the way to Lagos to catch a flight.”
The Gateway International Airport, inaugurated for commercial operations on October 7, was conceived in 2021 as part of Governor Abiodun’s long-term vision to create a modern, integrated transport network across Ogun State.
