In a high-intensity encounter that kicked off the second round of Group B fixtures, Zimbabwe’s veteran forward Knowledge Musona proved his worth by rescuing a vital point for the Warriors in a 1-1 draw against Angola. The match, held in Marrakesh on Friday, was a tale of two halves, with both sides fighting desperately to keep their knockout stage ambitions alive.
Angola drew first blood midway through the opening half, thanks to the clinical finishing of Qatar-based striker Gelson Dala. In the 24th minute, a perfectly weighted lobbed pass from To Carneiro found Dala inside the box, who skillfully slotted the ball past Zimbabwe’s 40-year-old goalkeeper, Washington Arubi. Before the goal, Zimbabwe had missed a golden opportunity to take an early lead when Bill Antonio fired wide from close range, much to the disappointment of the small crowd in attendance.
The equalizer came deep into first-half stoppage time, sparked by a quick counter-attack after Angola lost possession in midfield. Musona, who had been recalled to the starting lineup as one of four tactical changes by coach Marian Marinica, showed his experience. Receiving a sharp pass inside the area, he sent a composed, low shot through the legs of a defender and beyond the reach of Angolan keeper Hugo Marques to level the score.
The second half turned into a tactical battle, with both goalkeepers being called into action. Marques, who played much of the match with a heavily bandaged head following a collision, pulled off a stunning acrobatic save late in the game to deny Zimbabwe substitute Tawanda Chirewa. Despite the pressure from both sides, neither could find a winner before the final whistle.
This result leaves both Zimbabwe and Angola in a precarious position. Both teams now sit two points behind group leaders Egypt and South Africa, having played an extra game. With only the top two teams from each group guaranteed a spot in the next round, both sides will be looking nervously at the remaining fixtures to see if they can secure a path forward as one of the best third-placed finishers.
