Rema emerged as the standout star at the AFRIMA 2026 awards, walking away with the biggest honours of the night and cementing his place at the top of African music’s new generation.
The 24-year-old hitmaker claimed three major awards, including Best Male Artiste in Western Africa and Artiste of the Year. He also won Best African Artiste, Duo or Group in African RnB and Soul for his global smash, Calm Down. In the process, he edged out some of Nigeria’s most celebrated names, including Burna Boy, Davido, Wizkid and Asake, in two of the most competitive categories.
An emotional Rema, while receiving his awards, expressed gratitude to his fans and the organisers, describing their support as the driving force behind his journey so far.
While Rema dominated the spotlight, other artistes also had reasons to celebrate. Burna Boy picked up the Album of the Year award, further adding to his impressive catalogue. Yemi Alade’s You Are, featured in Iyanu: The Animated Series, won Best Soundtrack in a Movie, Series or Documentary. Rising star Shallipopi also made a strong statement as Laho earned him Best Song of the Year and Best Collaboration.
The night also recognised talent from across the continent, with Tanzania’s Jux winning Best Male Artiste in Eastern Africa, while Cindy Le Coeur was honoured for her contribution to music in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
AFRIMA 2026 once again highlighted the depth and diversity of African music while celebrating the continent’s rich cultural heritage. Lagos played host to the awards for the third time, following previous editions in Ghana and Senegal. The event, held at the Eko Hotels and Suites Convention Centre in Victoria Island, was marked by energetic performances from top artistes, adding colour and excitement to a memorable night.
