An Al Jazeera journalist was shot while covering a Palestinian demonstration in the occupied West Bank, as Israeli forces moved in to disperse the crowd, AFP reporters on the scene confirmed.
The protest erupted in Nur Shams refugee camp near Tulkarem, where residents were demanding the right to return to homes evacuated earlier this year amid Israeli military operations across northern West Bank camps. Around 150 camp residents gathered when the journalist, Fadi Yassin, was hit in the leg.
Paramedic Abdullah Nairat of the Palestinian Red Crescent Society, who oversaw Yassin’s evacuation, said the bullet entered his right leg, passed through, and struck his left thigh. “His condition is stable, and we managed to control the bleeding,” Nairat noted. Yassin was transported by ambulance while still in the midst of the protest.
Following the shooting, Israeli troops advanced from within the camp to disperse demonstrators. Two protesters and a cameraman from Jordanian channel Roya were briefly detained. The Israeli military stated it is investigating the incident.
Nur Shams, like other refugee camps in the Palestinian territories and neighboring Arab countries, was established for Palestinians displaced or expelled during the creation of Israel in 1948. Israel has maintained occupation of the West Bank since 1967. According to the UN’s humanitarian office, nearly 40,000 Palestinians have been displaced by recent Israeli operations in northern West Bank camps.
This incident underscores ongoing tensions in the region, where protests over displacement and the right of return frequently collide with military crackdowns.
