Nigeria’s democracy is heading toward a defining moment, and all eyes are now on Professor Joash Amupitan, the man President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has tasked with leading the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Taking over from Professor Mahmood Yakubu, Amupitan inherits an electoral body burdened by severe public skepticism. His appointment comes at a time when voter trust is arguably at an all-time low, scarred by widespread allegations of manipulation and operational failures that plagued the last general elections.
The immediate challenge for the new INEC Chairman will be monumental: he must urgently address the clamor for genuine electoral reform to restore credibility and public confidence well ahead of the crucial 2027 polls. The success or failure of his tenure will ultimately determine the future perception of Nigeria’s entire democratic process.
