Atiku Backs Sowore’s Push for Nnamdi Kanu’s Freedom

zooyolsblog

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has openly declared his support for the immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Describing Kanu’s prolonged detention as a “dark spot on Nigeria’s commitment to justice,” Atiku said it was time for the government to uphold the rule of law.

In a post shared on his X handle on Thursday, Atiku aligned himself with the campaign initiated by human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, who recently launched a fresh call demanding Kanu’s release.

Atiku wrote that the “continued detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu remains an open sore on the nation’s conscience and a dent on Nigeria’s belief in the rule of law.” He criticized the government’s refusal to obey court orders granting Kanu bail, describing it as “an abuse of power and a direct assault on justice.”

He added, “I stand in full solidarity with the campaign led by @YeleSowore for his immediate release or lawful prosecution. We fail as patriots if we let this matter linger as another unhealed wound in our national journey.”

Meanwhile, Sowore had earlier called on governors, lawmakers, traditional rulers, and religious leaders from the South-East to rally behind the movement for Kanu’s freedom. He revealed that he had reached out to several prominent figures, including Anambra State Governor Charles Soludo, Abia State Governor Alex Otti, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, urging them to join the campaign.

Zoyols Blog gathered that Sowore’s initiative has begun gaining traction across the country, sparking fresh conversations around justice, fairness, and the need for Nigeria to demonstrate genuine respect for court rulings and democratic values.
