Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar held a high-profile meeting with ex-President Goodluck Jonathan at Jonathan’s Abuja residence on Saturday evening. The visit, which took place shortly after Jonathan’s return from Guinea-Bissau, is widely regarded as part of the initial high-level consultations ahead of the 2027 general election.
Atiku personally confirmed the meeting on his verified Facebook page, writing: “It was a pleasure catching up with former President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday evening, following his recent return from Guinea-Bissau.”
The visit comes hot on the heels of a major political move by the former Vice President: his official defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). This party switch follows his recent resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a decision he attributed to claims that the PDP had allegedly strayed from the core principles of its founding fathers.
The sustained engagement with major political figures like Jonathan, combined with his recent alignment with the ADC, strongly indicates that Atiku Abubakar is positioning himself to potentially emerge as the presidential candidate for the African Democratic Congress in the upcoming 2027 election cycle.
