Tensions in the Middle East have raised new concerns for one of the world’s most crucial maritime chokepoints: the Bab al-Mandeb Strait. As the conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran escalates, analysts are now warning that this strategic passage into the Red Sea could soon face direct threats.
Iran has already restricted access to vessels from countries it considers hostile while allowing only friendly nations to pass, a move that has driven up global oil prices and contributed to an ongoing energy crunch. Now, Tehran has indicated that it may target the Bab al-Mandeb Strait if U.S. forces launch a ground operation on Iranian territory.
The latest flare-up began on February 28, when U.S. and Israeli airstrikes hit Iran, prompting Tehran to retaliate across the region. Iran’s recent threats have slightly redirected tanker traffic, with more vessels now choosing Bab al-Mandeb as an alternative route, according to transport economist Rico Luman. “We’re talking about three to four extra tankers per day, which may seem small but is a significant change for global shipping,” he noted.
An Iranian military official said the Bab al-Mandeb is “among the most strategic straits in the world” and emphasized that Iran has both the capability and the intent to pose a credible threat if provoked.
The strait, known in Arabic as the “Gate of Tears,” is a narrow waterway connecting the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden in the Indian Ocean. Stretching about 100 kilometers long and 30 kilometers wide, it separates Yemen on the Arabian Peninsula from Djibouti and Eritrea in the Horn of Africa.
Bab al-Mandeb is a vital artery for global trade. Ships traveling between Europe and Asia often pass through it on their way to the Red Sea and the Suez Canal, linking the Indian Ocean to the Mediterranean. In 2023, around 26,000 ships transited the Suez Canal, though numbers dropped to roughly 12,700 by 2025 after Huthi rebels attacked vessels in the Red Sea.
The strait is also a key passage for oil. The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported that 12 percent of global oil shipments moved through Bab al-Mandeb in the first half of 2023. By mid-2025, after continued attacks and regional disruptions, the volume had fallen to less than half of its 2023 levels. Meanwhile, with Iran constraining the Strait of Hormuz, Saudi Red Sea exports through the port of Yanbu surged to record levels of about four million barrels a day.
Militarily, the region is among the most fortified in the world. The United States and France maintain major bases in Djibouti, while China opened its first overseas military base there in 2017. Conflicts like the Israel-Hamas clashes in Gaza in late 2023 triggered further Huthi threats, targeting ships heading to Israeli ports and escalating raids in the Red Sea. In response, the European Union launched the Aspides naval operation in 2024, while U.S. and U.K. forces carried out strikes on Huthi positions to protect shipping lanes.
With these mounting risks, the Bab al-Mandeb Strait has become a flashpoint that underscores how geopolitical tensions in the Middle East can ripple through global trade and energy markets.
