Her statement came hours after US authorities announced the capture of the man accused of his assassination, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson.
For 48 hours, the nation was consumed by the manhunt for the shooter who gunned down the 31-year-old Kirk on Wednesday. The breakthrough came when authorities released surveillance photos of a person of interest, which led to a tip from a family member of Robinson. Utah Governor Spencer Cox confirmed the arrest in a news conference, crediting the suspect’s family for contacting police after Robinson allegedly confessed to or implied his involvement.
The loss of her husband has been a devastating blow for Erika Kirk, who described him as “the perfect father… the perfect husband.” In her address, however, she directed a powerful message at his killer and those who share his ideology. “The evil-doers responsible for my husband’s assassination have no idea what they have done,” she said. “The movement my husband built will not die. It won’t. I refuse to let that happen.”
Robinson, who is being held on suspicion of aggravated murder, is from a Republican family in St. George, a conservative city in southern Utah. Those who knew him expressed shock at his alleged involvement. Heather McKnight, a former neighbor, told AFP she was stunned that the “little skinny guy” could have committed such a heinous act. A former elementary and middle school classmate, Jaida Funk, echoed the sentiment, saying, “It’s definitely unexpected.”
Reports have begun to emerge detailing some of Robinson’s online behavior and political leanings. Utah Governor Spencer Cox stated that the suspect was radicalized “in a fairly short amount of time,” though he did not elaborate on the details. Authorities reportedly found unused bullet casings in a weapon believed to have been used in the shooting, one of which was inscribed with “Hey, fascist! Catch!” while another featured a reference to “Bella ciao,” an Italian anti-fascist song. Other casings had symbols and phrases from online gaming culture.
Robinson is expected to be formally charged in the coming days and faces the possibility of the death penalty. Donald Trump, a close ally of Kirk, has said he would like to see that punishment imposed.
