Dangote Refinery Guarantees Steady Fuel Supply and Market Calm

Zoyols Blog

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals has once again stepped forward to reassure Nigerians of its unwavering commitment to maintaining a steady supply of Premium Motor Spirit across the country. The refinery emphasized that its operations are designed to ensure market stability, even as seasonal fluctuations and economic pressures continue to impact the energy sector.

During the recent holiday season, the refinery took a proactive stance by implementing a temporary price support intervention. This move was specifically designed to ease the financial burden on households at a time when spending is traditionally at its peak. It is worth noting that this is the second year in a row the company has absorbed significant costs in the interest of the public. Following logistics support initiatives in 2024, the refinery introduced a price reduction in 2025 to keep the market calm and make fuel more affordable for the average citizen.

However, a recurring challenge has been the disconnect between the refinery’s wholesale pricing and the actual cost at the pump. While the refinery lowered its prices to provide relief, many retail filling stations across the country failed to pass these savings on to consumers. This meant that despite the refinery’s intervention, many Nigerians were still paying higher prices than necessary during the festivities.

With the holiday season now over, the refinery has moved to realign its pricing to more sustainable levels. This adjustment is essential for maintaining long-term market balance and ensuring the facility can continue to operate efficiently. The gantry price for PMS stands at N799 per litre, while retail outlets managed by MRS are currently selling at N839 per litre.

David Bird, the Chief Executive Officer of Dangote Petroleum Refinery, confirmed that the facility is currently pumping roughly 50 million litres of PMS into the domestic market every single day. He highlighted that the distribution network is functioning at full capacity, with fuel evacuation moving smoothly to all parts of the country. This consistent output is a testament to the refinery’s role as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s energy sector.

One of the key technical advantages of the refinery is its inherent flexibility. According to Mr. Bird, the facility is designed to process an extensive variety of crude and intermediate feedstocks. This adaptability is crucial because it allows the refinery to maintain a steady flow of petrol even during periods of planned maintenance. For Nigerians, this means a significantly lower risk of the sudden shortages or “fuel queues” that have historically plagued the domestic market.

By producing fuel locally, the Dangote Refinery acts as a vital buffer, shielding the Nigerian economy from the volatility of international oil markets and the unpredictability of import logistics. The management remains dedicated to the goals of national energy security and price transparency, positioning the refinery as a stabilizing force that provides long-term value to the public.
