The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has raised a red flag over what it describes as a coordinated attempt by certain politicians and interest groups to derail its ongoing investigations. The commission revealed on Thursday that it has uncovered plots to launch “campaigns of calumny” aimed at tarnishing the reputation of its leadership and the institution as a whole.
The commission’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, explained that these groups have allegedly recruited “paid jobbers” to carry out sponsored media attacks. These attacks are specifically designed to paint the EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede, as politically biased. The agency believes the ultimate goal of these disgruntled elements is to intimidate the commission and create a sense of fear that would prevent the investigation of opposition figures.
The EFCC warned that as the 2027 general elections approach and the political atmosphere heats up, these smear campaigns are likely to become even more intense. However, the commission made it clear that it remains strictly non-political. Oyewale stated that the agency’s radar does not discriminate between the ruling party and the opposition, noting that several prominent figures from across the political spectrum are currently either under investigation or facing trial in court.
In a firm message to those behind these plots, the commission noted that it is keeping a close watch on their activities and will not be blackmailed into silence. The EFCC maintained that it is simply following its Establishment Act and the Nigerian Constitution. It also emphasized that it will not be pressured into making premature public disclosures about politically exposed persons currently under the scanner.
The agency reiterated its commitment to the patriotic task of improving public accountability in Nigeria. It stressed that no political actor with a history of corruption should expect a hiding place, regardless of their affiliations. The message remains clear: the EFCC intends to fulfill its mandate of ensuring justice without fear or favor, regardless of the mounting political pressure.
