Expert Urges Government to Promote Ofada Rice for Diabetics.

The Federal Government has been called upon to significantly intensify awareness campaigns regarding the health benefits of Nigeria’s indigenous foods, with a special emphasis on Ofada rice. According to Damilola Esther Alabi, a nutrition advocate and Founder of Smokeyhut Delights, this locally grown rice is highly beneficial, particularly for individuals managing diabetes.

Alabi made this crucial appeal in Abuja during the “Ofada Renaissance Experience,” an event themed “An Experience in Culinary and Cultural Affairs.” She underscored that promoting local dishes achieves a triple benefit: it improves public health outcomes, helps revive precious cultural values, and reduces the nation’s costly reliance on imported food products.

According to the food entrepreneur, Ofada rice possesses a remarkable nutritional richness and medicinal value that sets it apart from imported counterparts, making it an excellent choice for diabetic patients. Alabi explained that the locally sourced grain contains essential nutrients that support more stable and better blood sugar regulation compared to most foreign rice varieties.

“It is healthy, beneficial and often recommended for people treating illnesses related to diabetes,” she noted. “For some, it is more like medicine.”

Beyond its health benefits, Alabi believes that supporting local dishes like Ofada rice is a powerful way to strengthen unity across different tribes, as food naturally serves as a cultural connector. “This event represents a tradition that originated from Ogun State. Ofada brings people of diverse backgrounds together. It promotes unity, culture and healthier eating habits,” she said.

She urged younger generations to consciously appreciate and fully embrace traditional meals. By replacing foreign, imported foods with local staples, the nation can not only preserve its cultural identity but also provide a substantial boost to the Nigerian economy.
