Prominent human rights lawyer Femi Falana has criticized former United States President Donald Trump for what he described as a deliberate attempt to mislead the global community with false claims of a Christian genocide in Nigeria.
Falana made the remark during an appearance on Politics Today, His comments came shortly after Trump’s declaration of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern,” a move reportedly based on allegations that Christians were being systematically targeted and killed in the country.
Trump had further claimed that he had directed the U.S. Department of Defence to consider possible military intervention should the Nigerian government “continue to allow the killing of Christians.”
Responding to the statement, Falana said Trump’s remarks revealed a deep disregard for African nations. “Mr. Trump doesn’t see us as anything significant, whether Nigeria or South Africa,” Falana remarked. “To him, we are either a sh*thole country or a disgraceful one.”
He stressed that his view was rooted in the principles of human rights rather than diplomacy, accusing Trump of spreading unfounded narratives. “From a human rights standpoint, my position is clear. Mr. Trump has lied to the world by alleging a Christian genocide in Nigeria without offering a shred of credible evidence,” Falana stated.
The lawyer’s response has drawn attention to the recurring issue of misinformation in global politics and the potential damage such claims can inflict on a nation’s image. Falana maintained that Nigeria’s internal security challenges, though real, should not be distorted or exploited for political motives on the international stage.
