Zamfara State First Lady, Hajiya Huriyya Lawal, has reaffirmed her commitment to raising public awareness on cancer prevention, early detection, and care for survivors across the state.
She made this known on Saturday while leading a massive cancer awareness walk through the streets of Gusau, aimed at sensitizing residents on the importance of regular screening and adopting healthy lifestyles.
The walk, themed “Walk Away Cancer,” began at the Yariman Bakura Specialist Hospital and moved through Sani Abacha Way, Central, and Bello Barau Street before ending at the Government House. The First Lady was joined by the wife of the Deputy Governor, medical experts, civil society groups, youth bodies, and women associations who showed strong support for the cause.
Speaking at the end of the event, Hajiya Huriyya Lawal urged residents to prioritize early testing, explaining that timely detection is key to saving lives and reducing the high rate of cancer-related deaths, especially among women.
Health professionals who participated in the walk echoed her message, calling for continuous enlightenment at both rural and urban levels. They stressed that early diagnosis and prompt medical intervention remain the most effective tools in the fight against cancer.
