Former presidential candidate and PDP chieftain Dr. Gbenga Hashim has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately release the international passport of activist and former presidential contender Comrade Omoyele Sowore. He described the continued seizure as an abuse of power and a direct threat to democratic freedoms.
Hashim made the appeal in Abuja during a courtesy visit from Sowore, held alongside PDP chairmen in the Federal Capital Territory. The meeting also included the Chief of Staff, Mr. Kamaldeen Adebayo Sanni, and the National Coordinator of the Gbenga Hashim Solidarity Movement, Abdulrazaq Hamzat.
Reflecting on their shared pro-democracy struggles dating back to 1989, Hashim highlighted Sowore’s long-standing courage and commitment. He emphasized that the gathering was not merely nostalgic, but a reminder of the sacrifices that have preserved Nigeria’s democratic space.
“Sowore’s consistency and refusal to yield to intimidation make him a symbol of principled resistance and an inspiration for young Nigerians seeking meaningful change,” Hashim said. “Nigeria is worth fighting for, and real progress is always possible, no matter the obstacles.”
Hashim condemned what he called the ongoing persecution of Sowore for speaking truth to power. He noted that the continued seizure of his passport has punished him without conviction and infringed on his right to family life. He warned that democracies weaken when dissent is criminalized, stressing that protecting opposing voices is essential for governance.
He urged President Tinubu to act decisively and order the immediate return of Sowore’s passport, highlighting the need to uphold justice, the rule of law, and respect for fundamental human rights.
The meeting also allowed Sowore to reconnect with longtime allies, as participants reflected on pivotal moments that shaped their enduring commitment to democracy, civic courage, and accountable leadership.
