A routine Ibom Air flight from Uyo to Abuja was dramatically interrupted on Wednesday morning when a passenger was arrested for the alleged theft of a significant sum of money. The incident, which occurred around 7:00 a.m. just as the aircraft was preparing for departure, involved the theft of ₦290,000 belonging to a foreign traveler.
The alarm was raised shortly after boarding concluded. Eyewitnesses recounted that the foreign passenger discovered the cash missing from a bag he had placed in the overhead luggage compartment. Crew members immediately intervened, with one fellow passenger stepping forward to report that he had seen the suspect previously handling the foreigner’s bag.
The Mid-Air Investigation
Despite the accusation, the suspect initially denied any involvement. A search of his carry-on luggage yielded nothing, increasing the tension inside the cabin. However, when several passengers insisted on a more thorough search, the suspect reportedly became visibly agitated.
This agitation prompted further checks by the cabin crew. According to witnesses, the missing cash was eventually discovered cleverly concealed in the suspect’s socks and, separately, tucked away under his assigned seat.
Handover to Authorities
Following the discovery, airport security personnel were called onto the tarmac. The suspect was promptly escorted off the aircraft and handed over to aviation authorities at the airport for a full investigation and necessary legal action.
The management of Ibom Air has not yet released an official statement regarding the in-flight incident. The quick actions of the crew and fellow passengers, however, ensured that the suspected mid-air theft was swiftly foiled.
