The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has expressed strong optimism that the rise of state-owned airlines will provide a much-needed boost to Nigeria’s domestic and regional flight networks. According to the Minister, these sub-national carriers are becoming essential players in a market where international airlines currently dominate, operating approximately 277 weekly frequencies within the region.
Keyamo shared these insights in Abuja following a visit from the management team of Pioneer Airlines, a carrier owned by the Bayelsa State Government. The visit came on the heels of the airline successfully securing its Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority. The milestone marks a significant step forward for Bayelsa’s foray into the aviation industry, signaling its readiness to begin commercial flight operations.
During the meeting, the Group Managing Director of Pioneer Airlines, Capt. Okobaundu Ungbuku, commended the Minister for creating an environment that encourages local investment. In response, Keyamo noted that seeing state governments take an active interest in the aviation business is a major win for the country’s economic strategy. He explained that the federal government is fully prepared to support these domestic operators through initiatives like the Nigerian Leasing Company, a special purpose vehicle designed to ease the burden of aircraft acquisition.
The Minister’s vision is to see enough local carriers emerge to compete effectively for regional routes. He pointed out that the sheer volume of international flights currently operating in Nigeria shows a clear demand that home-grown airlines should be meeting. By increasing the number of state-backed participants, Keyamo believes the country can better harness its own market potential, providing more options for travelers while keeping economic benefits within the nation’s borders.
