Across South America, football fever is now shaping more than just chants in stadiums, it is also influencing the names parents give their children. As the World Cup approaches, a growing number of babies are being named after global football stars, turning everyday family records into a reflection of sporting admiration.
In countries like Ecuador, which is set for its fifth World Cup appearance, official civil registry data shows that the trend leans heavily toward international icons rather than local heroes. Neymar of Brazil leads the list with 3,847 children named after him, a clear sign of his lasting impact despite being in what is likely the final stretch of his World Cup journey.
Close behind is France’s Kylian Mbappé, whose rapid rise to global fame has already inspired more than 2,800 namesakes. Colombia’s James Rodríguez follows in third place with 2,136 children carrying his name, showing how World Cup memories continue to live on through new generations.
The influence of football legends Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo is also deeply visible in Ecuador. The country records 1,549 children named Lionel, alongside 38 named Messi. Cristiano appears 178 times, while Ronaldo has been used for 1,006 children, reflecting the long standing global reach of both players.
In Colombia, the pattern is slightly different, with Kylian Mbappé leading the naming trend at 836, followed by Neymar with 269. Cristiano and Ronaldo together account for 220 names, according to data from earlier records.
Brazil, home to Neymar himself, also shows strong admiration for the forward, with 2,443 children named after him. Interestingly, the country also shows growing affection for Mbappé, with more than 400 children named Kylian or Killian.
Argentina, where Lionel Messi’s legacy remains unmatched, saw a surge in babies named Lionel after the country’s World Cup triumph in 2022, although the trend has since cooled down slightly.
Elsewhere in the region, football inspired creativity has produced even more unusual combinations. In Chile, one family drew attention after naming their child Griezmann Mbappé, combining the names of French stars Antoine Griezmann and Kylian Mbappé. The child’s siblings were also named after football greats, including James Modric, while cousins carried names inspired by Lionel Messi, Andrés Iniesta, and Neymar Ronaldo, showing just how deeply football culture continues to shape personal identity across the continent.
