Lauretta Onochie, former Chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission, joined millions around the world in marking the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, calling on Nigerians to deepen compassion, inclusion, and equal opportunities for citizens living with disabilities. Zoyols Blog reports that she shared her reflections in a statement titled “ON THIS DAY” on her verified Facebook page.
Onochie, widely known as “Madam Due Process” during her tenure in President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, described persons with disabilities as individuals whose courage “lights up this nation.” She highlighted their resilience in the face of societal and systemic barriers as a source of inspiration for collective action. “Every day, persons with disabilities rise above barriers many of us will never see,” she wrote. “Despite challenges, they continue to teach us the true meaning of strength, patience, and humanity.”
Linking her advocacy to her political journey, Onochie explained that she aligned with the African Democratic Congress because of its inclusive structure, led by Dr. Chike Okogwu, a Nigerian living with a disability. She stressed that the day should remind everyone that “every life is precious, every voice matters, and every citizen deserves to stand tall with dignity and opportunity.”
In her message, Onochie underscored key commitments that she believes both citizens and institutions must uphold: making accessibility a standard rather than a privilege, creating opportunities that value talent over physical condition, promoting empathy in daily interactions, and ensuring that no one feels invisible or forgotten. She addressed the global disability community directly, saying, “You are loved. You are valued. You are part of the heartbeat of our nation.”
Onochie also acknowledged the influence of her former students and colleagues in the United Kingdom, as well as former UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, for supporting her as she overcame speech challenges. She concluded with warm wishes to the international disability community: “Happy International Day of Persons with Disabilities to everyone.”
The International Day of Persons with Disabilities, observed annually on December 3, aims to raise awareness of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights, and well-being of persons with disabilities worldwide.
