Real Madrid have secured their place in the Champions League round of 16 after edging Benfica 2-1 in the second leg of their play-off clash on Wednesday night at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The Spanish giants did not have it all their way early on. Benfica struck first to level the tie in the 14th minute when Rafa Silva found the net, briefly silencing the home crowd. Madrid, however, responded with intent. Aurelien Tchouameni restored control with a fierce effort from distance, bringing the hosts firmly back into the contest.
With the tension rising and the stakes clear, Vinicius Jnr delivered the decisive blow. His goal proved to be the difference on the night, sealing qualification for the LaLiga side and ensuring their campaign continues into the knockout phase.
Paris Saint-Germain also booked their spot in the last 16, holding Monaco to a 2-2 draw. The result was enough to see the French champions progress without late drama.
Galatasaray joined them despite suffering a 3-2 defeat to Juventus. The Turkish side had done enough in the first leg, and their 7-4 aggregate advantage carried them through to the next round.
