Nollywood actress Mary Remmy Njoku has called on men to show deeper understanding and compassion towards their partners as they navigate the emotional and physical changes that come after childbirth.
She explained that postpartum depression is often rooted in the emotional struggle many women face as they adjust to motherhood. According to her, it is not just about hormones but also about mourning the version of themselves that existed before motherhood while learning to embrace the new woman they have become.
Njoku emphasized that true love during this stage means accepting and cherishing the woman a partner is evolving into, rather than holding on to who she used to be. She urged men to appreciate this transformation, noting that every relationship naturally changes as couples move through life’s different seasons.
She added that empathy, patience, and emotional support from men can make a world of difference, helping their partners heal and strengthening the bond between them.
“Postpartum depression is mourning the death of the girl you once were and learning to embrace the woman you are becoming,” she wrote. “Motherhood is as real as it gets. To truly love the mother of your children, stop trying to revive the girl she once was. She is gone. Instead, get to know and love the woman she has become.”
In a light-hearted tone, Njoku encouraged men to see the beauty in their partner’s evolution. “Look at the bright side,” she added. “You get to love different versions of the same woman at different stages of your marriage or relationship. Nature has given you variety enjoy it.”
