A coalition known as the New Nigeria Integrity Movement, representing the Middle Belt Zone, has formally requested that former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan consider a return to the political stage for the 2027 general election. The group asserts that the nation is in dire need of experienced leadership to navigate the mounting challenges currently testing the country’s stability.
The call came following a high-level strategy meeting where the group expressed growing concern over the state of the nation. In a statement jointly released by their National Leader, Hon. Pastor Peter Hassan, and Secretary, Dr. Blessing Eliagu, the movement pointed to the severe insecurity, economic turmoil, and worsening quality of life affecting millions of Nigerians. They emphasized that while infrastructure projects are commendable, they do not provide immediate relief for the hunger and poverty that have become daily realities for many families, especially across the Middle Belt.
The organization is positioning this appeal as a non-partisan plea for a national reset. They described Jonathan as a statesman whose previous tenure was characterized by a genuine respect for democratic principles, tolerance, and a commitment to national unity. The group argued that his leadership style—marked by humility and adherence to the rule of law—is exactly what is required to restore public trust and stabilize the country.
Beyond just an endorsement of his past performance, the group views his potential candidacy as a way to reinforce the principle of power rotation, which they believe is essential for maintaining political equilibrium in Nigeria. They urged citizens to remain peaceful and steadfast in their advocacy for better governance, insisting that the country requires a shift in focus toward human welfare and economic recovery.
In their communiqué, the group also called upon international partners and democratic allies to support efforts aimed at fostering stability within Nigeria. While they acknowledge the gravity of the current hardships, they maintain that silence is not an option and that the time for decisive, responsible action is now. They are urging all Nigerians to keep pushing for policies that prioritize the well-being of the populace as the 2027 electoral cycle approaches.
