The family of the late singer Mohbad has officially prohibited his widow, Wunmi Adebanjo, from using the Aloba surname while a DNA test determines the paternity of their son, Liam.
The move comes as tensions continue over the paternity question following Mohbad’s controversial death on September 12, 2023. Mohbad passed away after receiving an injection from an auxiliary nurse, and his body was later exhumed for an autopsy amid public scrutiny. In May 2025, pathologists reported that the exact cause of death remained inconclusive, further complicating the investigation.
In a statement signed by family head and Mohbad’s father, Joseph Aloba, Wunmi was barred from using the Aloba name, citing the absence of a legally recognized marriage. The statement emphasized that no statutory or customary marriage had been completed, as the Yoruba traditional rites, including payment of the bride price, were never fulfilled.
The family has appointed Oladayo Ogungbe as their sole legal representative for matters concerning the DNA case and Mohbad’s estate, while Wahab Shittu will continue liaising with investigative authorities regarding Mohbad’s death. The statement confirmed that both Wunmi and Liam will be included in the estate administration once the DNA test verifies Liam as Mohbad’s biological child.
This decision underscores the family’s intent to protect their lineage and ensure proper legal processes are followed amid ongoing disputes.
