Nigeria wrapped up its campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games with an impressive seventh place finish on the overall medals table, ending the competition as Africa’s highest-ranked nation.
Team Nigeria amassed a total of 24 medals across athletics, weightlifting, para sports and judo. The haul included 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals, placing the country ahead of fellow African contenders South Africa and Kenya in the final standings.
Australia dominated the Games after collecting 171 medals, including 70 gold medals, to finish comfortably at the top of the table. England secured second place with 110 medals, while Canada ended the competition in third. India, Scotland and New Zealand completed the top six positions.
Nigeria’s campaign was driven by several remarkable performances that produced historic moments, especially on the athletics track.
Samuel Ogazi delivered one of the country’s biggest highlights by storming to victory in the men’s 400 metres with a winning time of 44.25 seconds. His triumph made him the first Nigerian athlete to win Commonwealth Games gold in the event.
Ezekiel Nathaniel also produced a record-breaking performance, becoming the first Nigerian man to capture the Commonwealth title in the men’s 400 metres hurdles, further strengthening the country’s reputation in track events.
Nigeria also celebrated success in the field events, where Chukwuebuka Enekwechi secured the nation’s first-ever Commonwealth Games gold medal in the men’s shot put. Ruth Usoro added to the medal tally with a silver medal in the women’s long jump after delivering one of the finest performances of her career.
Udodi Onwuzurike also impressed on the track by claiming silver in the men’s 200 metres. The achievement marked a significant improvement from his sixth-place finish at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games and rounded off another memorable outing for Team Nigeria.
