Professor Charles Anosike, the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), has been officially nominated as the Aviation Sector CEO of the Year for 2024. This prestigious recognition comes from the Board of Editors of a leading national daily, marking a significant milestone in Professor Anosike’s leadership journey.
According to a statement released on Friday by NiMet’s Corporate Media Office in Abuja and monitored by Reports, the Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of the publishing firm, Mr. Steve Omanufeme, personally presented the nomination letter to Professor Anosike. During the visit, Omanufeme highlighted that the award is a testament to the proactive transformation NiMet has undergone in a very short period. The agency’s contributions to various socio-economic sectors through strategic local and international partnerships have notably improved under Anosike’s watch.
A key factor in the nomination was NiMet’s consistent issuance of early weather warnings. In an era where climate change serves as a threat multiplier, these alerts have been crucial in preventing the loss of lives and property, particularly concerning the devastating floods that have impacted farmlands across the country. The editors also praised the agency’s collaborative spirit, citing its work with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC). This partnership allows for the sharing of critical data to better predict and respond to climate-sensitive diseases like malaria and cholera.
The agency’s commitment to international standards was another highlight of the review. The successful re-accreditation of NiMet’s Regional Training School in Oshodi, Lagos, by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) team from Geneva, underscored the global quality of the agency’s operations. This, coupled with a strong focus on human capital and staff capacity development, made Professor Anosike a standout choice for the honor.
In his response, Professor Anosike expressed deep gratitude for being found worthy of such a distinction. He noted that the honor would serve as a powerful motivation to further fulfill NiMet’s legal mandate and meet the high expectations of Nigerians and other key stakeholders. He was also quick to credit the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo SAN, for his supportive leadership, while dedicating the recognition to the diligent staff and management team at NiMet.
The official investiture ceremony is scheduled to take place on Saturday, March 15, 2025, at the Eko Hotels and Suites in Victoria Island, Lagos. The event is expected to draw a distinguished crowd of industry leaders and policymakers as they celebrate excellence in Nigeria’s aviation and meteorological sectors.
