No More Paper: Petroleum and Aviation Ministries Go Fully Digital

Zoyols Blog

In a significant move toward a more modern and efficient government, the Ministry of Petroleum Resources is officially bidding farewell to physical paperwork. The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack, has directed the ministry to fully digitize its operations, setting a firm deadline of December 31, 2025, to complete the transition.

This directive was made public during the launch of the Electronic Content Management System (ECMS) in Abuja. This shift is part of a broader federal strategy to automate work processes across all government departments. Mrs. Walson-Jack emphasized that for a ministry as vital as Petroleum—which oversees the nation’s oil and gas sector—manual record-keeping is no longer sustainable in a fast-paced global economy.

The ministry’s role in managing national revenue and energy security makes this digital leap even more critical. By moving away from paper, the government aims to speed up decision-making, secure sensitive records, and build a more transparent system. Mrs. Walson-Jack noted that the transition isn’t just about installing new software; it requires a new level of “digital discipline” from every staff member to ensure that institutional memory is preserved and information is easily accessible.

Supporting this initiative, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, highlighted that a successful oil and gas sector serves as the engine room for the rest of the Nigerian economy. He pointed out that unlocking the full potential of the industry requires these modern tools. Interestingly, the Minister also called on the Head of Service to provide digital literacy training for top officials, ensuring that leadership is just as tech-savvy as the staff they oversee.

Adding to the conversation, the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Patience Oyekunle, described the event as a historic turning point. She explained that moving to a digital platform will drastically improve how the ministry handles its daily tasks and engages with other agencies. She also credited the Minister’s leadership for ensuring the project stayed on track for its timely deployment.

This digital transformation is expected to reduce the bureaucratic bottlenecks that often slow down government business. With the end-of-year deadline fast approaching, all eyes are now on the ministry to see how quickly it can adapt to this paperless era and set a standard for other government agencies to follow.
