Presidential hopeful Peter Obi has reiterated his commitment to the Labour Party, assuring that his name will appear on the ballot for the 2027 general election. He also confirmed his alliance with the African Democratic Congress as part of a broader coalition aimed at challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress.
Speaking to journalists after visiting a school on the outskirts of Abuja, Obi stated, “I am a confirmed member of the Labour Party, and for emphasis, my name will be on the ballot during the 2027 general election.”
Addressing the defection of Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah to the APC, Obi described Mbah as a friend and suggested that the governor’s decision reflected personal political calculations. “As for the alleged plot to capture the South-East, we are not in a military era where people are captured. Leadership is about guiding people to follow willingly. No one is being captured, but the government must do more to earn the people’s support,” he said.
On the issue of Nnamdi Kanu and calls for his release, Obi reiterated his longstanding position. “There was no need for his arrest in the first place. I have consistently said I will consult, negotiate, and discuss with anyone agitating. Now that the matter is in court, the rules must be followed not just for Kanu, but for all agitators across the country. Dialogue is essential, and whatever actions we take must respect the law,” he emphasized.
Obi also shared his thoughts on the incoming INEC chair, stressing the importance of credible elections. “We want a Nigeria where elections are free, fair, and transparent, and where competent, committed, and ethical leaders are elected. Positions are temporary, and everyone must act responsibly to safeguard their reputation and serve the nation,” he said, wishing the new chair well.
The former governor’s comments underscore his focus on political integrity, inclusive dialogue, and a commitment to participating fully in the 2027 electoral process.
