Obi urges Soludo to govern with grace, not resentment

Amid a tense political atmosphere in Anambra State, former governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on Governor Charles Soludo to govern with humility, compassion, and integrity rather than with resentment or personal attacks. Speaking to journalists at the Guild of Editors in Abuja, Obi reminded leaders that their responsibilities are both to the people and to God.

His remarks followed Soludo’s Certificate of Return ceremony, where the governor reportedly mocked critics, labeling Obi a “frustrated politician without a club” and attributing some of Anambra’s educational challenges to him. Rather than respond with anger, Obi emphasized the importance of restraint, service, and ethical leadership. He clarified his role during the recent Anambra election, stating that he only attended three public events where he was invited and did not endorse any candidate, meet with traditional rulers, or engage in political manoeuvres.

Reflecting on Election Day, Obi recounted moments when irregularities threatened the voting process. “When outsiders attempted to cast votes in our community, I urged calm and allowed the process to unfold peacefully. True leadership is measured not by political contests, but by courage, fairness, and respect for the dignity of the people even under pressure,” he said.

Obi also reflected on his own tenure as governor, noting that he and Jim Nwobodo were among the few to govern Anambra in their forties, and he served two terms. “I have no personal issue with Soludo. I pray God grants him even greater heights if it inspires humility, compassion, and genuine service to the people,” Obi added.

Meanwhile, the aspiring traditional ruler of Isulo, Orumba South Local Council, Dr. Meshack Okpala, congratulated Soludo on his re-election. Speaking at a virtual press briefing, Okpala praised the governor for transforming Anambra during his first tenure, describing his accomplishments as inspiring and a reflection of dedication to the welfare of the people.
