OPay Nigeria has unveiled a new security feature, Location Guard, aimed at strengthening user protection and preventing unauthorized access to customer accounts. The announcement came during the grand finale of the OPay Security Vote Challenge on Friday at the company’s Lagos office, where four winners were each awarded ₦1 million.
Elizabeth Wang, OPay’s Chief Commercial Officer, explained that Location Guard adds an extra layer of security by requiring facial verification for transfers conducted outside a user’s usual location. “This feature ensures that even if your phone is stolen or used in a different city, only your Face ID can authorize transactions,” she said. Wang emphasized that the innovation was developed in response to customer feedback and marks the company’s eighth major security advancement.
Highlighting the company’s commitment to safeguarding users, Wang noted that OPay has a dedicated team of 35 engineers continuously working to enhance its security systems. She assured customers that the company will continue investing in cutting-edge technology to protect funds and maintain trust across its platforms.
The four winners of the Security Vote Challenge were Adegoke Oluwatoyin Adewunmi from Facebook, Oyinye Mercy Ekeogu from Instagram, Ezeonwuka Greatness from Twitter (X), and Charles Chinaemere Lhugba from TikTok. Participants who did not win received ₦50,000 each as consolation prizes.
The event also featured OPay brand influencers, including Funke Akindele, Brain Jotter, Broda Shaggi, and Layi Wasabi, who have actively supported the campaign to raise digital safety awareness among users.
