Elections in Nigeria are often treated like battles that must be won by any means necessary, with violence, manipulation, and endless court disputes. But Ekiti State seems to be rewriting that story as the next governorship election draws near. For the first time in the state’s political history, there appears to be a rare consensus — that Governor Biodun Oyebanji should continue for another four years. Across political divides, from party loyalists to opposition leaders, there is an unusual unity around his leadership and performance.
What makes Oyebanji stand out is not just his achievements but the way he has managed to bridge divides and make governance feel inclusive. His approach has earned him admiration from various quarters, including those who once stood on opposing sides. Many in Ekiti now describe him as a man of integrity, humility, and genuine concern for the people — traits that have quietly reshaped the state’s political landscape.
Since assuming office, Oyebanji has gone beyond the usual rhetoric of governance. He reached out to prominent figures like Chief Afe Babalola (SAN), Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), Chief Deji Fasuan, and other respected leaders, seeking their counsel and keeping them informed about his administration’s programs. These gestures have earned him credibility and the trust of both politicians and non-politicians alike.
Oyebanji’s deep understanding of Ekiti politics stems from his long journey in public service. A proud son of the soil, he grew up and schooled in the state, unlike many of his predecessors. His political rise began as Special Assistant on Parliamentary Affairs to Governor Niyi Adebayo, followed by roles as Chief of Staff, Commissioner in various ministries, and eventually Secretary to the State Government under Kayode Fayemi. These experiences prepared him for leadership and gave him the insight to manage the state’s affairs effectively.
His inclusive style has turned even his critics into allies. Former governor Ayo Fayose, once a formidable opponent, has publicly praised Oyebanji, describing him as a “bridge builder” and “the best person to govern Ekiti at this time.” Similar commendations have come from Senator Biodun Olujimi and other influential figures, all acknowledging his fairness, accessibility, and performance.
Perhaps what surprises many is that Oyebanji never saw himself as a typical politician. Known for his honesty and straightforwardness, he often insisted he was “not a politician.” His decision to run for governor stunned even his closest associates. But those who knew his work ethic, humility, and strong moral compass were not surprised by his eventual success.
As governor, Oyebanji has maintained a close connection with the people. He often walks through communities to interact directly with residents and hear their concerns. His open-door policy and personal responsiveness, even through phone calls, have endeared him to the grassroots. For him, leadership is not about titles but service — a principle that resonates deeply with Ekiti citizens.
Financial prudence is another hallmark of his administration. He has cleared long-standing gratuity arrears amounting to over N14.6 billion, ensuring retirees live with dignity. Regular payment of pensions and civil servant salaries has also strengthened trust in government. His infrastructural strides have not gone unnoticed either. Governors Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Ahmed Usman Ododo, during their recent visit to commission projects, commended his commitment to development. Similarly, the chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Zach Adedeji, lauded the governor’s performance after unveiling the new state revenue building.
As the 2026 election approaches, Ekiti appears set for one of its most peaceful and united electoral seasons. From political heavyweights like Niyi Adebayo, Segun Oni, and Kayode Fayemi to ordinary citizens and trade unions, the support for Oyebanji cuts across every group.
For once, Ekiti seems to have found a leader who blends vision with humility — a man whose leadership is built on trust, accessibility, and genuine love for his people. Governor Biodun Oyebanji may not carry a magic wand, but his results speak like one.
