Panic in Kogi as Gunmen Storm Community and Kidnap Residents

Zoyols Blog

Panic has gripped the Jege community in Yagba East Local Government Area of Kogi State following a violent invasion by gunmen late Monday night. The attackers reportedly moved into the area under the cover of darkness, shooting indiscriminately to create chaos. In the ensuing confusion, several residents were forcibly taken away, leaving the community in a state of shock and fear.

Eyewitness accounts shared with Reports describe a harrowing scene that has left the atmosphere in Jege and neighboring Ejuku incredibly tense. A local resident, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, explained that it is currently difficult to pinpoint the exact number of people missing. While many were abducted, others managed to flee into the surrounding bushes and have yet to return. The community is struggling to differentiate between those who successfully escaped and those who are now in the hands of the kidnappers.

Confirmation of the incident came through Oluomo JD Akogun, the President of the Jege Development Association. In a statement released shortly after the attack, Akogun noted that the bandits targeted a settlement located between Jege and Ejuku. The sound of heavy gunfire echoed across the community, signaling the gravity of the situation. Since Tuesday morning, families have been frantically checking on loved ones, hoping for news of their safety as the community remains on edge.

Despite the growing concern, official information from the authorities has been slow to emerge. Efforts by Zoyols Blog to reach the Kogi State Police Command were unsuccessful, as the spokesperson, CSP William Aya, did not respond to inquiries regarding the abduction or the current security status of the area. This silence has only added to the anxiety of residents who feel vulnerable to further attacks.

In a related development, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo recently addressed the media in Lokoja to announce a significant breakthrough in the state’s fight against crime. The Governor revealed that a joint security operation led to the recovery of a substantial cache of arms and ammunition from various hideouts. This success was the result of over a week of intelligence-driven surveillance aimed at flushing out criminal elements across Kogi State.

Governor Ododo explained that these security measures were intensified following a recent consultation with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who emphasized the need for a more aggressive approach to securing the state. While celebrating the recovery of weapons, the Governor urged citizens to remain vigilant and provide security agencies with credible information. He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting lives and property, even as communities like Jege face the immediate reality of insecurity.
