Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has expressed optimism about the country’s growing international reputation, noting that despite internal security hurdles, Nigeria is gaining positive recognition for its economic reforms and counter-terrorism efforts.
Speaking during a recent interview with Fox News while visiting the United States, the First Lady shared her thoughts on the global spotlight currently shining on the nation. This high-profile engagement follows a notable moment at the 74th U.S. National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, where President Donald Trump publicly acknowledged her presence, describing her as a “very respected woman” and a Christian pastor. The First Lady described the gesture as both unexpected and deeply encouraging, viewing it as a sign that the world is paying attention to Nigeria’s progress.
Addressing the tough conversations surrounding security, including the “Christian genocide” narrative that has trended internationally, the First Lady clarified that the government has been proactive in educating global partners on the true situation. She pointed out that as a democracy approaching an election cycle, narratives are often shaped to influence external perceptions. She highlighted that President Bola Tinubu has taken decisive steps, including declaring a state of emergency on security, to protect all citizens regardless of their faith.
On the economic front, Senator Tinubu emphasized the administration’s courage in tackling long-standing issues, such as the removal of the fuel subsidy. She noted that for the first time, Nigeria is shifting away from being a mere exporter of crude and is now seeing the benefits of domestic refining. This transition, she argued, is already helping to stabilize exchange rates and reduce the heavy reliance on fuel imports that drained the nation’s resources for decades.
The First Lady welcomed the United States’ involvement and interest in Nigeria’s security situation, calling the partnership a “blessing.” She noted that the current international attention provides a unique platform for dialogue that can yield “better fruit” for both nations. Her message was clear: while the journey started from a difficult place, the foundation is being laid for a stable, investor-friendly country where religious freedom is protected and economic growth is becoming a steady reality.
