Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Saturday hosted Team Lagos to a grand reception at the Lagos House Sports Ground in Ikeja following their outstanding performance at the 9th National Youth Games held in Asaba, Delta State.
Team Lagos made history at the U-15 Championship, topping the overall medals table for the first time since the Games began in 2013, after clinching 52 gold, 32 silver, and 26 bronze medals.
To celebrate the athletes’ achievement, Governor Sanwo-Olu announced generous cash rewards for the medalists, coaches, and officials of the Lagos State Sports Commission. Each gold medalist in individual events will receive N500,000, while gold medalists in team events of two will share the same amount. Larger teams that won gold will get N1 million collectively.
Silver medalists in individual categories are to receive N300,000 each, with pairs sharing the same amount, while team silver winners will get N700,000. For bronze medalists, individual winners will take home N250,000, doubles teams will share N250,000, and larger teams will receive N500,000.
The governor also approved N25 million for the management of the Lagos State Sports Commission, while 61 coaches will get N300,000 each. Athletes who did not win medals will be rewarded with N100,000 each for their efforts and participation.
Speaking at the event, Sanwo-Olu commended the team for bringing pride to the state and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting young athletes.
“I want to sincerely thank you for your remarkable performance and for putting Lagos State on the map,” the governor said. “This cash reward is a token of appreciation. What matters more is ensuring you have the facilities, environment, and equipment needed to keep excelling. The Governor of Delta State even called to acknowledge that we have the best athletes in the country.”
He encouraged the young sportsmen and women to remain disciplined and dedicated, promising continued government support to help them reach global standards.
“We want to nurture your talents so you can go beyond national competitions and make Lagos proud on the international stage,” Sanwo-Olu added.
