Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Cornelius Adebayo, hailing him as a patriot, democrat, and statesman whose courage and conviction helped shape Nigeria’s democratic journey.
Speaking at a night of tributes and service of songs in Abuja on Tuesday, Saraki described Adebayo as a selfless leader who gave his all for the democracy the nation enjoys today. He noted that Adebayo’s sacrifice and steadfastness in the face of political adversity made him one of the pillars of Nigeria’s democratic struggle.
“He gave his soul for the democracy we all benefit from today. Many of us here are products of the freedom he and others fought for,” Saraki said.
Among the dignitaries at the event were Professor Ibrahim Gambari, former Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, and other prominent Nigerians who worked closely with the late former governor of Kwara State.
Saraki recalled fond memories shared by his late father, Dr. Olusola Saraki, who had deep admiration for Adebayo’s integrity and commitment to good governance. “My father once told me that winning my first election was sweet, but the sweeter victory was when C.O. Adebayo became governor,” he recounted.
Adebayo, who served as governor of Kwara State in 1983 before the military takeover that ended the Second Republic, was also a prominent member of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), the pro-democracy group that fought to restore the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential mandate of Chief M.K.O. Abiola.
Saraki reflected on his relationship with Adebayo, saying their political differences never overshadowed their mutual respect and shared devotion to public service. “He was a man of courage and integrity. Even as a former governor, he never hesitated to correct me or share his honest views on governance. That kind of sincerity is rare today,” he said.
He added that Adebayo’s life exemplified true nationalism and moral leadership, noting that his values remain a powerful lesson for future generations. “He was a true nationalist who believed Nigeria could only progress when guided by truth, conscience, and justice,” Saraki remarked.
Saraki offered prayers for the late leader’s family, asking God to strengthen them and grant Cornelius Adebayo eternal peace.
