Umar Sadiq’s encouraging run of form has earned him another round of applause from Real Sociedad manager Sergio Francisco, marking the second time in just a week that the Nigerian forward has been singled out for praise. His latest impact came in the Copa del Rey, where he played a key role in the clubs two to zero win over Reus on Wednesday.
Francisco had already commended Sadiq after his strong display against Villarreal last weekend, a match that marked the strikers first start of the season. Until then, his league appearances had mostly been limited to coming off the bench.
Introduced as a substitute once again in the cup fixture, Sadiq wasted no time making his presence felt. Just four minutes into the second half, he created the opening goal for Mikel Goti with an intelligent assist. Then, deep into stoppage time, he calmly slotted home a penalty in the ninety third minute to put the game to bed.
The goal was his first since his loan spell at Valencia, when he scored in a one to one draw with Rayo Vallecano back in May. Having spent most of this season as Sociedad’s third choice attacker, his patience and readiness have impressed his manager, who has repeatedly highlighted Sadiq’s work ethic and contribution whenever called upon.
Francisco described the striker as a player who consistently brings energy and physical presence to the pitch. He praised Sadiq’s ability to win duels, link play, and trouble defenders, especially in the final third. The coach also noted that it was Sadiq who earned the decisive penalty, reinforcing his growing importance to the team.
Sadiq’s performances have not gone unnoticed beyond Spain, as he recently made Nigeria’s fifty four man provisional list for AFCON twenty twenty five, a recognition that reflects his renewed momentum at club level.
