A truly tragic incident unfolded on Sunday in the Imota area of Ikorodu, Lagos State, when a man believed to be suffering from mental health issues brutally attacked and killed a soldier. The shocking event occurred in broad daylight, sending terrified onlookers scrambling for safety.

The deceased soldier was attached to Operation AWASE, the joint military special task force responsible for combating crime across the state, and was reportedly deployed for internal security duties at the time of the attack.

Eyewitnesses recounted that the assailant, armed only with a wooden club, approached the soldier and repeatedly struck him. The 81 Division of the Nigerian Army has since confirmed the incident and offered profound condolences to the family of the fallen soldier.

Musa Yahaya, the Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations for the 81 Division, disclosed on Tuesday that the tragic attack occurred around 4 PM on Sunday, November 16, 2025. He clarified that the soldier was making an effort to de-escalate a chaotic situation when the attacker struck him on the head with a heavy log, inflicting severe injuries.

Other soldiers quickly intervened, managing to bring the chaotic situation under control by neutralising the attacker and recovering the deceased soldier’s weapon. Yahaya further explained that the injured soldier was immediately rushed to Ikorodu General Hospital, where he was sadly pronounced dead.

An official investigation into the tragic incident has been launched by the Army. The public has been urged to exercise caution and remain vigilant by reporting any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.
