Twelve Nigerians arrested in Ghana for cybercrime and human trafficking

Zoyols

In a coordinated effort to crack down on organized crime, a joint task force in Ghana has apprehended twelve Nigerian nationals suspected of running a sophisticated cyber fraud and human trafficking ring. The operation, which took place on Thursday, March 12, 2026, was a collaborative effort involving the IGP’s Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team, the Criminal Investigations Department Surveillance Unit, and the Ghana Immigration Service.

The raid was led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Malaika Jibril Alhassan and Superintendent Francis Baidoo. During the search of the premises, officials recovered an array of equipment believed to be the tools of the trade for digital scams, including twenty-five laptop computers and several mobile phones. While twelve individuals are currently in custody, authorities noted that six other Nigerian nationals managed to evade arrest and are being sought for illegal migration offences.

The encounter was not without its tense moments. In an attempt to block the officers from carrying out the search, the suspects reportedly released German Shepherd dogs to intimidate the enforcement team. The situation was eventually brought under control after reinforcements arrived from the CID Headquarters, ensuring the operation could proceed without further disruption.

Preliminary findings suggest the group was involved in a wide spectrum of digital crimes. These include online scams, identity theft, phishing, and mobile money fraud, as well as more aggressive tactics like cyber extortion and blackmail. The investigation also points toward credit card fraud and electronic forgery.

The activities of the group are being processed under several legal frameworks, including the Cybersecurity Act of 2020 and the Electronic Transactions Act. Officials pointed out that this case highlights a worrying trend where cybercrime networks are becoming increasingly intertwined with illegal migration and human trafficking.

The Ghana Police Service has reiterated its focus on intelligence-led operations to protect the country’s digital space and national security. They emphasized that the success of this raid was a direct result of seamless inter-agency cooperation. Moving forward, the authorities remain committed to dismantling such criminal enterprises through strict legal application and continued vigilance across the country’s borders.
