The United States has arrested former fighter pilot Gerald Brown over allegations that he trained Chinese military personnel without proper authorization. According to authorities, Brown was taken into custody in Indiana after returning from China, where he had reportedly been residing since late 2023. Officials said the case raises serious national security concerns, given his long military background and access to sensitive defense knowledge.
The arrest was announced by the United States Department of Justice, which accused Brown of conspiring with foreign nationals to provide combat aircraft training to pilots serving in the Chinese Air Force. Prosecutors alleged that he carried out these activities without obtaining the required approval from the US State Department, which regulates sensitive military-related training offered to foreign nationals. Investigators believe he may have been negotiating training arrangements with foreign contacts before traveling overseas to begin the work.
Brown reportedly had a 24-year career in the United States Air Force, where he served in several high-level operational and training roles. During his service, he was said to have commanded units connected to nuclear weapons delivery systems, participated in combat operations, and worked as an instructor for fighter pilots using advanced aircraft simulators. After retiring in 1996, he later worked in commercial aviation before transitioning into defense-related contract work.
Authorities claim that Brown later became involved in training programs focused on advanced fighter aircraft, including A-10 attack jets and F-35 stealth fighters. Investigators say he began discussions about a potential contract in 2023 with Stephen Su Bin, who had previously been imprisoned in the United States over espionage-related activities. Brown allegedly traveled to China in December 2023 to begin the training assignment.
Officials from the Federal Bureau of Investigation emphasized that the case reflects broader concerns about foreign attempts to obtain military expertise from current and former US service members. A senior counterintelligence official warned that foreign governments have continued efforts to recruit individuals with specialized defense knowledge. The arrest was described as part of ongoing efforts to protect national security and prevent the transfer of sensitive military technology and skills to rival nations.
