The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, on Thursday officially launched the installation of modern streetlights across Abuja, a project tagged Light Up Abuja.
Speaking at the flag-off, Wike said the initiative is designed not only to brighten the city at night but also to strengthen security and reduce crime across the territory.
“When we assumed office in August 2023, one of the most glaring challenges was that nearly 80 percent of Abuja was in darkness. A city without light is exposed to insecurity, and we knew we had to act,” he explained.
According to the minister, the streetlights will be installed and managed by contractors for a period of five years, with each unit fitted with advanced security features. He emphasized that these measures would make it difficult for criminals to vandalize poles or steal cables.
“Criminals will soon realize it is no longer business as usual. The new system comes with surveillance tools that will help security agencies track and apprehend anyone attempting to sabotage the project,” Wike added.
He assured residents that security agencies would work hand in hand with the companies handling the installations to ensure the success and sustainability of the project.
With this initiative, the FCT administration hopes to restore Abuja’s reputation as a safe and vibrant capital city that remains active and secure even after dark.
