Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has dismissed reports claiming that some leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party are urging him to contest the 2027 presidential election.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Wike’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, described the report as a fabrication from individuals who thrive on falsehood and mischief rather than contributing to the nation’s progress.
Olayinka explained that the story, circulated by an online platform, was nothing more than a desperate attempt to drag Wike into needless political drama. He noted that those behind the falsehood were merely seeking attention through baseless claims.
“The report suggesting that some PDP leaders met to convince the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to run for president in 2027 is another empty tale from idle minds,” Olayinka said. “Such stories only expose the lack of direction among those who propagate them.”
Reaffirming Wike’s position, Olayinka stressed that his principal’s loyalty remains firmly with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. “As far as Wike is concerned, it is President Bola Ahmed Tinubu till 2031,” he declared.
He further stated that Wike has always been straightforward in his political dealings. “Wike does not operate in secrecy. He says what he means and does what he says. It is unfortunate that those bent on tarnishing his image cannot think beyond cheap propaganda,” Olayinka added.
Addressing claims of a PDP meeting allegedly convened to push Wike’s presidential ambition, Olayinka clarified that the only meeting held on August 20, 2025, was one involving PDP stakeholders from the southern region. According to him, that gathering was to deliberate on a subsequent meeting planned for Lagos the next day, which was aimed at micro-zoning party positions meant for the South.
He said the outcome of the southern PDP meeting was publicly released in a statement titled Re: Purported Meeting Of PDP Southern Zoning Consultative Summit, signed by prominent party figures including state chairmen from Imo, Abia, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers; the National Vice Chairman (South East); and the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, among others.
Olayinka emphasized that these facts were well-documented in statements and news reports across the country, exposing the falsity of claims linking Wike to any presidential plan.
He noted that the motive behind the fake report was evident but futile. “The character and personality of the FCT Minister are well known to Nigerians. He is open, decisive, and not one to play politics behind closed doors,” he said.
Olayinka reaffirmed that Wike’s commitment to President Tinubu’s administration remains unshaken. “He has made it clear that he stands solidly with the President and will continue to do so till 2031,” he said.
He concluded that Wike’s focus is squarely on fulfilling the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda by driving infrastructural development and implementing transformative policies across the Federal Capital Territory. “To ensure the success of the President’s vision, the Minister is determined to make Abuja a model capital city that competes globally in terms of infrastructure and livability,” Olayinka stated.
