The Airport Police Command has taken a 14-year-old boy into custody following a daring but dangerous attempt to stow away at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos. The teenager, identified as Eke Miracle, was intercepted on the airport tarmac on Monday in what security officials have described as a major breach of aviation protocols.
The situation came to light when the minor was discovered allegedly trying to find a hiding spot beneath an aircraft. The boy managed to bypass several layers of security to reach the restricted airfield. ASP Mohammed Adeola, the spokesperson for the Airport Police Command, explained that preliminary checks showed the teenager had no authorization to be in the area, directly violating the safety regulations set by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria.
Upon his arrest, the authorities handled the situation with a focus on child protection. The boy’s parents were contacted immediately, and all subsequent interviews and procedures were carried out in their presence to ensure his rights were protected. This approach aligns with the standard legal requirements for handling minors in such sensitive circumstances.
The Commissioner of Police for the Airport Command, Ogunbode Olufunke, used the incident to remind the public of the critical nature of airport security. She emphasized that these facilities are high-security zones and that any unauthorized access poses a threat to both the individual and the infrastructure. The Commissioner also appealed to parents and guardians to be more observant of their children’s movements, especially near restricted environments.
Moving forward, the police confirmed that the case will follow the established path of juvenile justice. The 14-year-old is expected to be brought before a specialized court to address the security breach while ensuring the legal process remains appropriate for his age.
